Greenbrae is a small residential community nestled between Larkspur, Kentfield and San Rafael. It is an unincorporated town of Marin County, and all of Greenbrae's civic services are located and provided by either Larkspur or by the Marin Civic Center in San Rafael. In Scottish, Greenbrae means “green hillside.”
In 1940 land-developer Neils Schultz bought 635 acres from the Archdiocese of San Francisco and broke ground on what was known as "Marin's new city." Greenbrae was designed as a neighborhood of custom homes and oak trees, set into the hills on winding streets with Spanish names. For the era, there was an unusual emphasis on saving trees, design, setbacks, landscaped medians and open areas. Mr. Schultz helped build more than 1,000 homes, 1,500 apartments and dozens of businesses between Highway 101 and Manor Road in Kentfield. In 1952, Marin General Hospital opened its doors and Greenbrae finally had the self-contained community Schultz had envisioned.
The bulk of homes are located on the hill to the north of the Bon Air shopping center. Many of the homes have views of Mt. Tamalpais, the San Francisco Bay, Corte Madera Creek and the surrounding lowlands. Hiking trails, parks and recreation are in neighboring Larkspur and Kentfield, or over the hill in San Rafael. Being so close to both 101 and the Larkspur Ferry makes Greenbrae an excellent location for a quick commute or ferry ride to San Francisco.
